Let's face it, the back of the Nexus 4 is glass and it will get scratched. But it's so darn cool looking you don't want to cover it up! This is why Google announced that it would be selling a bumper case alongside the Nexus 4, but it's pretty hard to come by. Luckily case maker Poetic has stepped in here, and makes a pretty nice bumper case for the Nexus 4 at an affordable price.
The basic idea of a bumper case is to cover up the sides of the device to provide some grip and keep either the front or back panels of the phone lifted off of any surface you put the phone on. This way the edges of the case take most of the bumps and bruises instead of the glass, but you still get to keep the nice aesthetics of that glittery back plate. In this respect the Borderline case does its job. The hard plastic colored sides are accented with grippy grey rubber material, which pulls double duty adding grip for when you're using the case and grip on tables when you set it down. Speaking of colors, as of now the Borderline is available in blue, green, purple, red, yellow and black.
The case definitely adds a bit of bulk to the Nexus 4, which may push it over the edge of being too big for some people's hands. I have pretty large hands and don't really notice the extra width and thickness, but this definitely isn't a paper-thin case. Because the edges are raised up higher than the whole of the back plate, the bumper actually does make the phone a little awkward to hold. With most devices you're used to having a convex back that you can wrap your fingers around, but using a bumper on the Nexus 4 means the back is technically concave and it definitely takes some getting used to.
The Poetic Borderline bumper case is probably your best bet right now if you're looking for a good middle ground between protecting your device and showing off the striking design. And at a hair under $10 on Amazon, it's kind of a no-brainer even if you'll only occasionally use it. Stick around after the break for a quick hands-on video and photos of the case.

MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) ? Liberia's people have a novel way of finding out how their government is spending their money.
On a bustling street in the capital, people can look up at an electronic information billboard that relays how state funds are being spent.
The U.S.-supported project in Monrovia aims to improve state transparency, and the government of Nobel laureate President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf wants passers-by who might not normally read newspapers or surf the Internet to see what government projects are under way and where its money is being channeled.
Hundreds turned out Wednesday as the Harvard-educated president switched on the billboard, which is connected directly to the Finance Ministry's database, for the first time.
The billboard amounts to another step in the country's reconstruction following back-to-back civil wars from 1989 to 2003 that killed an estimated 250,000 people, displaced millions and devastated the economy. Founded in the mid-19th century by freed American slaves, the impoverished country has received hundreds of millions of dollars in U.S. aid since the civil war.
The bright, colorful, viewer-friendly screen shows how tax dollars go to hospitals, roads, schools or agriculture, and how Liberia shapes up by sector compared to its West African neighbors.
Finance Minister Amara Konneh said the ultimate ambition is that Liberians "will hold public officials accountable for results." He acknowledged it won't be an antidote for corruption, but could help make inroads against it.
"The official corruption in our country is entrenched," Konneh told The Associated Press. "What we are doing by putting this symbol of openness out is to prevent; prevention is better than cure."
As Monrovians stopped to ponder the new billboard, some struggled to see the point or sensed a public-relations stunt.
"I don't see any significance," said James Smith. "Government should find another means to really educate people rather than plant billboards."
But Marie, a hairdresser who preferred to give only her first name, said: "Liberians should learn to appreciate a small beginning .... We were never being told of how our money was being spent. This is a way to start creating the awareness."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair, fired from his command in Afghanistan last May and now facing a court-martial on charges of sodomy, adultery and pornography and more, is just one in a long line of commanders whose careers were ended because of possible sexual misconduct.
Sex has proved to be the downfall of presidents, members of Congress and other notables. It's also among the chief reasons that senior military officers are fired.
At least 30 percent of military commanders fired over the past eight years lost their jobs because of sexually related offenses, including harassment, adultery, and improper relationships, according to statistics compiled by The Associated Press.
The figures bear out growing concerns by Defense Department and military leaders over declining ethical values among U.S. forces, and they highlight the pervasiveness of a problem that came into sharp relief because of the resignation of one of the Army's most esteemed generals, David Petraeus, and the investigation of a second general, John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan.
The statistics from all four military services show that adulterous affairs are more than a four-star foible. From sexual assault and harassment to pornography, drugs and drinking, ethical lapses are an escalating problem for the military's leaders.
With all those offenses taken together, more than 4 in every 10 commanders at the rank of lieutenant colonel or above who were fired fell as a result of behavioral stumbles since 2005.
The recent series of highly publicized cases led to a review of ethics training across the military. It also prompted Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to conclude that while training is adequate, it may need to start earlier in service members' careers and be reinforced more frequently.
Still, officials struggle to explain why the problem has grown and they acknowledge that solving it is difficult and will take time.
"I think we're on the path. I think the last two defense secretaries have made this a very high priority and have very much held people accountable. But we've got a ways to go," said Michele Flournoy, a former undersecretary of defense under President Barack Obama.
She said the military must enforce a "zero tolerance" policy and work to change the culture so service members are held accountable and made to understand that their careers will be over if they commit or tolerate such offenses.
"The policy is in place," she said. "I don't know that it's as evenly and fully enforced as intended."
For top officers, the numbers are startling.
Eighteen generals and admirals, from one star to four stars, were fired in recent years, and 10 of them lost their jobs because of sex-related offenses; two others were done in by alcohol-related problems.
The figures show that 255 commanders were fired since 2005, and that 78 of them were felled by sex-related offenses. A breakdown: 32 in the Army, 25 in the Navy, 11 in the Marine Corps and 10 in the Air Force.
Alcohol and drug-related problems cost the jobs of 27 commanders ? 11 in the Navy, eight in the Army, five in the Marine Corp(s and three in the Air Force.
"It's troublesome," said Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Navy's top spokesman. "Navy leadership is taking a look at why personal conduct seems to be a growing reason for why commanding officers are losing their commands. We're trying to get to the root causes. We don't really fully understand it."
He and other military leaders agree that poor leadership, bad judgment, and ethical lapses, rather than operational failures, are growing factors in the firings. But Kirby said it's not clear whether that has anything to do with the strains of the past 10 years at war or simply reflects deteriorating morals among the general population.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta ordered the ethics review in November. He said that "when lapses occur, they have the potential to erode public confidence in our leadership and in our system for the enforcement of our high ethical standards. Worse, they can be detrimental to the execution of our mission to defend the American people."
Anu Bhagwati, executive director of the Service Women's Action Network, said there is more focus on this issue now than ever in the past, but that there really is no sufficient deterrent in place. She said a major problem is that military commanders are responsible for deciding what cases should move forward.
She said military lawyers, who are trained and have a greater appearance of impartiality, should make such an important legal decision.
The statistics gathered and analyzed by the AP represent a very conservative estimate of the problem. While the Army, Navy and Marine Corps provided details for all military commanders who were lieutenant colonels or commanders and above for 2005 until now, Air Force officials said they could only provide data for colonels and above from 2008 until today.
Also, the figures reflect only officers who were in command positions. The numbers don't include what could be hundreds of officers fired from other jobs, such as administrative or other military posts. Military officials said they only collect data on officers in command who are fired.
The reasons for the firings are also murky. In some cases, no reason was listed; in other cases, it was vague ? such as "ethics" or "leadership" or for fostering a bad command climate.
There also are varying degrees of publicity when such action is taken.
In Sinclair's case, the charges and impending court martial have received extensive coverage. The five pages of allegations, which involve his conduct with five women who were not his wife, include one count of forcible sodomy, two counts of wrongful sexual conduct, six counts of inappropriate sexual relationships, and eight counts of violating regulations. He could receive life in prison if convicted.
But in many other cases, particularly of those below the rank of general, there is little public notice if the senior officer is in the Army or Air Force. The Navy, however, issues a public statement every time a commander is removed from a job.
The figures also highlight the Navy's reputation for being quick to justice. Although it is the second smallest of the four military services, the Navy has relieved the most commanders, 99, over the past eight years. By comparison, it was 83 for the Army, 41 for the Marines and 32 for the Air Force.
Dismissing a commander from a job does not mean that officer is forced out of the military. In some of the more serious cases, officers may be discharged or forced to resign. But in many other cases, service members may go on to another job for some time.
Still, a dismissal often signals the end of an officer's career, and with no chance for promotion, officers will often retire or leave the service.
The Army is the largest of the military services, reaching a peak of about 570,000 active duty soldiers at the height of the Iraq war. It is supposed to cut 80,000 troops by 2017. The Marine Corps is the smallest service, with about 202,000 at its peak during the wars and is set to slim down to about 182,000. The Navy has about 322,000 active duty forces and the Air Force has about 328,000.
The other reasons for dismissals by the services cover a broad range of offenses, from assault and drug and alcohol use to being a poor or abusive leader. There are also instances of fraud as well as a few cases where Navy officers commanding a ship have hit something, such as a buoy or another ship.
Four generals have lost their jobs in recent years as a result of public scandals. All were dismissed while Robert Gates was defense secretary:
?Gen. Michael Moseley, the Air Force Chief of Staff, was dismissed in 2008 for failing to address several nuclear-related mishaps by the service.
? Army Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley and Army Maj. Gen. George Weightman were dismissed because of the poor outpatient treatment of wounded soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2007.
?Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal resigned after members of his staff made disparaging remarks about Obama's national security team, including Vice President Joe Biden. A Pentagon investigation later cleared him of wrongdoing.

Algerian special forces launched a rescue operation Thursday Jan. 17, 2013 at the plant in the Sahara Desert and freed foreign hostages held by al-Qaida-linked militants. The bloody three-day hostage standoff took a dramatic turn Friday as Algeria's state news service reported that nearly 100 of the 132 foreign workers kidnapped by Islamic militants had been freed. That number of hostages at the remote desert facility was significantly higher than any previous report, but it still left questions about the fate of over 30 other foreign energy workers. ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) ? In a bloody finale, Algerian special forces stormed a natural gas complex in the Sahara desert on Saturday to end a standoff with Islamist extremists that left at least 23 hostages dead and killed all 32 militants involved, the Algerian government said.
With few details emerging from the remote site in eastern Algeria, it was unclear whether anyone was rescued in the final operation, but the number of hostages killed on Saturday ? seven ? was how many the militants had said that morning they still had. The government described the toll as provisional and some foreigners remained unaccounted for.
The siege at Ain Amenas transfixed the world after radical Islamists linked to al-Qaida stormed the complex, which contained hundreds of plant workers from all over the world, then held them hostage surrounded by the Algerian military and its attack helicopters for four tense days that were punctuated with gun battles and dramatic tales of escape.
Algeria's response to the crisis was typical of its history in confronting terrorists, favoring military action over negotiation, which caused an international outcry from countries worried about their citizens. Algerian military forces twice assaulted the two areas where the hostages were being held with minimal apparent mediation ? first on Thursday, then on Saturday.
"To avoid a bloody turn of events in response to the extreme danger of the situation, the army's special forces launched an intervention with efficiency and professionalism to neutralize the terrorist groups that were first trying to flee with the hostages and then blow up the gas facilities," Algeria's Interior Ministry said in a statement about the standoff.
Immediately after the assault, French President Francois Hollande gave his backing to Algeria's tough tactics, saying they were "the most adapted response to the crisis."
"There could be no negotiations" with terrorists, the French media quoted him as saying in the central French city of Tulle.
Hollande said the hostages were "shamefully murdered" by their captors, and he linked the event to France's military operation against al-Qaida-backed rebels in neighboring Mali. "If there was any need to justify our action against terrorism, we would have here, again, an additional argument," he said.
President Barack Obama said in a statement Saturday that the U.S. stood ready to provide whatever assistance was needed in the wake of the attack.
"This attack is another reminder of the threat posed by al-Qaida and other violent extremist groups in North Africa. In the coming days, we will remain in close touch with the Government of Algeria to gain a fuller understanding of what took place so that we can work together to prevent tragedies like this in the future," the statement said.
In New York, the U.N. Security Council issued a statement condemning the militants' terrorist attack and said all perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of such "reprehensible acts" must be brought to justice.
In the final assault, the remaining band of militants killed the hostages before 11 of them were in turn cut down by the special forces, Algeria's state news agency said. The military launched its Saturday assault to prevent a fire started by the extremists from engulfing the complex and blowing it up, the report added.
A total of 685 Algerian and 107 foreigner workers were freed over the course of the four-day standoff, the ministry statement said, adding that the group of militants that attacked the remote Saharan natural gas complex consisted of 32 men of various nationalities, including three Algerians and explosives experts.
The military also said it confiscated heavy machine guns, rocket launchers, missiles and grenades attached to suicide belts.
Sonatrach, the Algerian state oil company running the Ain Amenas site along with BP and Norway's Statoil, said the entire refinery had been mined with explosives, and that the process of clearing it out is now under way.
Algeria has fought its own Islamist rebellion since the 1990s, elements of which later declared allegiance to al-Qaida and then set up new groups in the poorly patrolled wastes of the Sahara along the borders of Niger, Mali, Algeria and Libya, where they flourished.
The standoff has put the spotlight on these al-Qaida-linked groups that roam these remote areas, threatening vital infrastructure and energy interests. The militants initially said their operation was intended to stop a French attack on Islamist militants in neighboring Mali ? though they later said it was two months in the planning, long before the French intervention.
The militants, who came from a Mali-based al-Qaida splinter group run by an Algerian, attacked the plant Wednesday morning. Armed with heavy machine guns and rocket launchers in four-wheel drive vehicles, they fell on a pair of buses taking foreign workers to the airport. The buses' military escort drove off the attackers in a blaze of gunfire that sent bullets zinging over the heads of crouching workers. A Briton and an Algerian ? probably a security guard ? were killed.
The militants then turned to the vast gas complex, divided between the workers' living quarters and the refinery itself, and seized hostages, the Algerian government said. The gas flowing to the site was cut off.
Saturday's government statement said the militants came across the border from "neighboring countries," while the militants said they came from Niger, hundreds of miles (kilometers) to the south.
On Thursday, Algerian helicopters kicked off the military's first assault on the complex by opening fire on a convoy carrying both kidnappers and their hostages to stop them from escaping, resulting in many deaths, according to witnesses.
The accounts of hostages who escaped the standoff showed they faced dangers from both the kidnappers and the military.
Ruben Andrada, 49, a Filipino civil engineer who works as one of the project management staff for the Japanese company JGC Corp., described how he and his colleagues were used as human shields by the kidnappers, which did little to deter the Algerian military.
On Thursday, about 35 hostages guarded by 15 militants were loaded into seven SUVs in a convoy to move them from the housing complex to the refinery, Andrada said. The militants placed "an explosive cord" around their necks and were told it would detonate if they tried to run away, he said.
"When we left the compound, there was shooting all around," Andrada said, as Algerian helicopters attacked with guns and missiles. "I closed my eyes. We were going around in the desert. To me, I left it all to fate."
Andrada's vehicle overturned allowing him and a few others to escape. He sustained cuts and bruises and was grazed by a bullet on his right elbow. He later saw the blasted remains of other vehicles, and the severed leg of one of the gunmen.
The site of the gas plant spreads out over several hectares (acres) and includes a housing complex and the processing site, about a mile (1.6 kilometers) apart, making it especially complicated for the Algerians to secure the site and likely contributed to the lengthy standoff.
"It's a big and complex site. It's a huge place with a lot of people there and a lot of hiding places for hostages and terrorists," said Col. Richard Kemp, a retired commander of British forces who had dealt with hostage rescues in Iraq and Afghanistan. "These are experienced terrorists holding the hostages."
While the Algerian government has only admitted to 23 hostages dead so far, the militants claimed through the Mauritanian news website ANI that the helicopter attack alone killed 35 hostages.
One American, a Texan ? Frederick Buttaccio from the Houston suburb of Katy ? is among the dead.
French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Saturday that a Frenchman killed, Yann Desjeux, was a former member of the French special forces and part of the security team. The remaining three French nationals who were at the plant are now free, the Foreign Ministry said.
The British government said Saturday it is trying to determine the fate of six people from Britain who are either dead or unaccounted for.
Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain said, "There is no justification for taking innocent life in this way. Our determination is stronger than ever to work with allies right around the world to root out and defeat this terrorist scourge and those who encourage it."
The Norwegian government said there were five Norwegians unaccounted for.
Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said Saturday one Romanian hostage was killed in the course of the siege, while the Malaysian government said two of its citizens were still missing.
The attack by the Masked Brigade, founded by Algerian militant Moktar Belmoktar, had been in the works for two months, a member of the brigade told the ANI news outlet. He said militants targeted Algeria because they expected the country to support the international effort to root out extremists in neighboring Mali and it was carried out by a special commando unit, "Those Who Signed in Blood," tasked with attacking nations supporting intervention in Mali.
The kidnappers focused on the foreign workers, largely leaving alone the hundreds of Algerian workers who were briefly held hostage before being released or escaping.
Several of them arrived haggard-looking on a late-night flight into Algiers on Friday and described how the militants stormed the living quarters and immediately separated out the foreigners.
Mohamed, a 37-year-old nurse who like the others wouldn't allow his last name to be used for fear of trouble for himself or his family, said at least five people were shot to death, their bodies still in front of the infirmary when he left Thursday night.
Chabane, an Algerian who worked in food services, said he bolted out the window and was hiding when he heard the militants speaking among themselves with Libyan, Egyptian and Tunisian accents. At one point, he said, they caught a Briton.
"They threatened him until he called out in English to his friends, telling them, 'Come out, come out. They're not going to kill you. They're looking for the Americans,'" Chabane said.
"A few minutes later, they blew him away."

For most people, the ability to appreciate a Chinese painting depends on whether they can understand it. Generally their appreciation steps are: what is painted? Is the image painted vividly? What is the implication of this painting? If they can answer all these questions, they will understand the painting. If they cant, the painting is not understood. This is a traditional storytelling method, which is often too much with the literal description. In general, fine brushwork or realistic Chinese painting is easy to appreciate with this method, for it is concrete, real and lucid.
However, it is more difficult to appreciate if it is freehand brushwork, especially ink and wash painting. Because it is not realistic, you have no way of knowing the implication.
In terms of art, the key of appreciating a painting lies in the theme. In other words, whether a painting can reflect a certain concept, ideology, firmly grasp the heartstrings of the viewers, giving full artistic enjoyment and enlightenment seems more important. It should be said that it is the real purpose of all art works.
However, if we are to enjoy the paintings from the following aspects may be better understood. It is proposed that art appreciation need to go through three stagesaesthetic perception, aesthetic comprehension and aesthetic creation.
Beautiful Lady Chinese Painting
Aesthetic perception requires us to perceive Chinese paintings directly. Such as what is painted? Bright color or dark color? Smooth lines or clumsy lines? Fine brushwork or freehand brushwork? In short, all these need to perceive intuitionally by yourself.
Aesthetic comprehension is conducted on the basis of aesthetic perception. That is we should understand the connotation of paintings based on intuitive feelings. This comprehension includes the understanding of art forms and artistic skills, the understanding of content and theme, and the understanding of the background, which requires strong thinking ability.
We can think step by step: what is demonstrated? How is performed? Is the paintingmethod appropriate? Is the theme adequately expressed? At the same time, we could pierce the artists thoughts through the image painted: enthusiastic praise or pungent satire? And we can analyze according to the authors life experience, creation features and life background as well.
Aesthetic creation is to create a new image on the basis of your own aesthetic experience, cultural knowledge and life experience after the preceding two stages. In this way, you will indeed gain inspiration and real significance when appreciate a Chinese painting.

Interior highlights of the CrossBlue are a centrally positioned 10.2-in touch screen, 3-D display of either the navigation route or the contents of the media center, and a user-programmable instrument cluster.
The CrossBlue features a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a TDI diesel, six-speed DSG dual-clutch automated manual transmission, and motors in front and rear for electric all-wheel drive.
The six-seat CrossBlue concept unveiled Jan. 14 at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit is meant to test the water for what may be a Volkswagen seven-seat entry into the midsize SUV market in North America. The vehicle, if produced, would slot between the Tiguan and Touareg in VW?s lineup, with a possible production version of the recent Cross Coupe concept vehicle coming in just below it, according to Rainer Michel, Vice President, Product Marketing & Strategy, Volkswagen of America.
A production version would give VW an entry into the fifth biggest market segment (midsize SUV) in North America?after full-size pickups, midsize sedans, compact SUVs, and compact sedans--for which VW sees growth above 20% until 2018 to around 1.4 million units, according to Michel. Participating in the segment could be crucial for VW?s North American growth goals.
?If you want to grow [in the North American market], you have to be participating in that segment,? said Michel. ?VW wants to have a car for every life stage, every age, every demographic.? Those comments might point to what the final go/no-go production decision might be when it?s due to be made in a high-level product steering committee meeting in the next couple of months.
The production CrossBlue would be ?really in the sweet spot [of the segment] with the Ford Explorer and Nissan Pathfinder,? said Michel, and would coexist with the shorter but wider Touareg halo entry-luxury SUV in VW?s lineup.
The CrossBlue concept, which is 196.3 in (4986 mm) long, 79.3 in (2014 mm) wide, and 68.2 in (1732 mm) tall, was designed in Germany under Walter de Silva (Head of Design, Volkswagen Group) and Klaus Bischoff (Head of Design, Volkswagen Brand) by a team led by Marc Lichte (Senior Designer, Volkswagen Brand). It is ?fully functional? and based on the MQB (the German acronym for modular transverse matrix) component set that underpins the new Golf?and many more current and future VW Group products with transverse engines. The MQB is so flexible it can span segments, from the subcompact Polo up to midsize models such as the CrossBlue concept.
?It is very flexible when it comes to not only the traditional length and wheelbase, but also width,? said Michel. ?What?s fixed is the relative location of the engine (and its inclination) and pedal box, which is very important when it comes to development with regard to crash performance.?
The interior team headed by Tomasz Bachorsky (Lead Designer, Volkswagen Brand) equipped the concept with six seats in three rows. In a production version, the second row would have the option of three seats to make it a full seven-seater. Legroom is ample in back, with 37.3 in (947 mm) in the second row and 36.1 in (917 mm) in the third. Load length with the third row folded is 48.8 in (1240 mm), 83.5 in (2120 mm) with the second row stowed, and 118 in (2997 mm) with a fully folded front passenger seat.
A 10.2-in center console touch screen is used for control of infotainment functions and shows hybrid system operation. The instrument cluster is user-programmable, offering a wide variety of functions and displays. Apple iPad minis are integrated as monitors in the front-row head restraints for rear passengers.
The concept features a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a 190-hp (142-kW) TDI diesel from the new VW Group EA288 engine family with a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automated manual transmission and two motors?40 kW in front and 85 kW in back?in an electric all-wheel-drive system. Total peak output is 305 hp (227 kW). The combination of diesel and electric motors means torque is even more impressive at a peak 516 lb?ft (700 N?m), with the diesel engine making 295 lb?ft (400 N?m) from just 1750 rpm and the electric motors producing 133 lb?ft (180 N?m) in front and 199 lb?ft (270 N?m) in back from 0 rpm.
Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) is estimated at 7.2 s. An 18.5-gal (70-L) fuel tank allows an overall driving range of 661 mi (1064 km). In all-electric mode, the SUV?s top speed is reduced from 127 to 75 mph (204 to 120 km/h) to allow up to a 14-mi (23-km) range from the central-tunnel-mounted 9.8-kW?h lithium-ion battery pack. Even at speeds of up to 75 mph, the internal-combustion engine is not engaged as long as the battery has sufficient charge. The power electronics unit integrated in the engine compartment operates at around 370 V. A dc/dc converter supplies the vehicle?s electrical system with the 12-V power it needs. Volkswagen estimates combined fuel economy would be 89 mpge in electric mode and 35 mpg as a hybrid.
In Offroad mode, all four wheels are driven and the front electric motor?which is supplied with energy by the TDI engine?operates exclusively as a generator and a power source for the rear electric motor. This is referred to as ?propshaft by wire? since the energy for driving the rear wheels is electrical rather than mechanical.
If a production CrossBlue comes to market, it would be equipped with conventional gasoline and diesel engines, but a hybrid would be a necessity. ?We will have to have plug-ins [hybrids] because of the shear volumes and in order to comply with the set requirements in California and the ZEV states,? said Michel.
?The challenge [with such as powertrain concept] is that it is driving cost into the car, but manufacturers don?t have a choice,? Michel continued. ?We have to make that fly.? The pure global size of Volkswagen, along with the leverage of the MQB, will make it much easier to bring such sophisticated powertrains compared to other companies, he concluded.

Developer Imangi Studios is reportedly planning to launch ?Temple Run 2? for iOS as early as next week. In an interview with Polygon, Imangi co-founder Keith Shepherd said that the widely popular app would be available through the Google Play platform and Amazon?s Appstore. While this sounds promising for Android lovers, Shepherd cautioned that ?Temple Run 2? launch plans have not been confirmed.
??With these things, you never know,? he said to the video game news source.
Unlike the first version of ?Temple Run,? the sequel was built entirely in the Unity cross-platform engine to enable easier porting between operating systems. Using Unity also helps eliminate problems that could occur between different versions of the game. For example, when the original game made its way to Android, it was met with significant performance and stability issues for some players.
The free-to-play mobile game generated millions in revenue and has seen more than 170 million downloads since its 2011 launch. The action adventure hit has garnered for than 15 million players that access the game each day, Shepherd also?told the Wall Street Journal.
?Temple Run 2? is largely the same as its predecessor with some new twists and turns?literally. The controls are the same, but players will find some new obstacles such as ziplines, mine tracks and sharper turns. The game progresses much more quickly than the original, with the main character moving at a faster pace and hurdles that are more subtly blended with the environment. According to Shepherd, the ?Temple Run? sequel has been in development since March and has pushed Imangi to expand its creative staff.
?When we started making the sequel we were trying to build a bigger, better, more awesome version than the first,? he told the Wall Street Journal. ?We?re still a relatively small studio, but we knew we were going to need some more help than just the three of us.?
While the second generation of ?Temple Run? may bring some new elements, the idea was to bring players the same overall experience.
?Our main goal was to provide something that felt familiar,? the Imangi co-founder also said. ?You immediately know how to play. You?re still running down this endless path, swiping to jump and turn and tilting.?
We?ll be looking out for the debut of ?Temple Run 2? for Android in the coming weeks, but Android users can check out the lengthy clip below to get a preview of what?s to come.

Actor Conrad Bain, who played father Phillip Drummond on " Diff'rent Strokes," died Monday night in Livermore, Calif.
His daughter told The Associated Press that Bain died of natural causes. He was 89.
TMZ, which first reported his death, quoted Bain's daughter Jennifer saying, "He was an amazing person. He was a lot like Mr. Drummond, but much more interesting in real life. He was an amazing father."
Bain became a household name starring opposite Gary Coleman and Todd Bridges on the iconic 1980s series. Coleman and Bridges played two brothers from Harlem, who are taken in by Bain's character to live with him and his daughter, played by Dana Plato, on Manhattan's Park Avenue.
After the series ended, the young child stars led troubled lives. Plato died in 1999 of a prescription drug overdose at age 34. Coleman died in 2010 at age 42 from a brain hemorrhage after years of financial and legal troubles. Bridges, 47, has turned his life around after struggling with drug addiction and facing criminal charges. Last year, he split from his wife of 14 years.
Growing Pains: The Tribulations of 1980s Child TV Stars
Bain, who hailed from Canada, played conservative neighbor Dr. Arthur Harmon on the feminist sitcom "Maude" before starring on "Diff'rent Strokes," which debuted in 1978. He also was a journeyman actor on stage, screen and television. After "Diff'rent Strokes" ended in 1986, he virtually retired from acting, reprising his role as Drummond in the 1996 series finale of the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air."
He is survived by three sons and one daughter and a twin brother, Bonar Bain, also an actor.

After withdrawing an initial public offering early last summer, a company employing a two-pronged approach to immunotherapy is raising private capital as it looks toward phase 3 trials of brain and kidney cancer drugs.
A December U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing indicates that TVAX Biomedical Inc. had raised $2 million in private financing and could continue raising $6 million. The company had planned for an IPO in early 2012 but withdrew it in May, citing poor market conditions. A representative for the company could not provide immediate details on the funding.
TVAX?s approach to immunotherapy is two-fold: vaccinate the patient with a combination of his own cancer cells and a powerful adjuvant, then use the partially activated T cells generated by that vaccine to manufacture high numbers of activated, cancer-killing T cells that are administered intravenously back into the patient.
On their own, both of these approaches have demonstrated therapeutic potential for cancer, the company says, but not enough to make them stand-alone treatments. Together in TVI-Brain-1, the company?s lead candidate for glioblastomas, they improved the median survival of patients by 50 percent in a phase 2 clinical trial.
Currently in an ongoing phase 2 trial, TVI-Brain-1 has been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for pivotal phase 3 trials in about 400 patients newly diagnosed with glioblastoma. The company anticipates the trial will begin this year and produce complete data by 2016. It also received FDA authorization to conduct phase 3 trials of the product in kidney cancer.
TVAX boasts that its platform has the potential to be less toxic than radiation and/or chemotherapy. It won?t be cheaper, though. In its corporate fact sheet (PDF), the company estimates prices would be in line with current treatments. A variety of other cancer applications for the platform are included in the company?s pipeline.
The trouble with cancer is that the immune system doesn?t recognize cancerous cells as foreign pathogens the way it does with viruses, etc. Scientists, then, are challenged with the task of training the immune system to eliminate cancer, which has been especially challenging in central nervous system cancers. But, like TVAX, a few other companies are taking cell-based approaches to vaccinations for brain cancer including ImmunoCellular Therapeutics, Innocell Corp., Northwest Biotherapeutics and Oncovir Inc. There are about 135,000 Americans with a history of cancer of the brain or other nervous system, reports to the National Cancer Institute.
TVAX is based in Lenexa, Kansas and was founded in 2004.

As Wisconsin?s businesses struggle with rising health insurance premiums, employers are looking to their workforce to help meet those challenges by encouraging healthier lifestyle choices.
Nationally, the Kaiser Family Foundation?s annual look at the state of employer-sponsored insurance shows health insurance costs are growing much faster than wages. The report says that while employee contributions to their health insurance premiums jumped by 180 percent since 1999, their earnings grew just a quarter as fast. The average health insurance plan offered by a large company is $15,745, and many employers are shifting more health care costs to their workers.
That?s why more employers are taking a proactive approach to lowering health risks, and employees are eagerly climbing on board.
Appleton-based Secura Insurance has offered employees an on-site ?mini physical,? a health risk assessment that includes a blood draw, cholesterol check, blood pressure and body fat measurement. Based on the risk evaluation score, employees can earn a 5, 10 or 15 percent credit to offset health and medical premiums.
?It?s a reward for being healthy, and it works,? says Becky Doell, human resources consultant at Secura. ?Every year more and more of our associates qualify for the maximum credit, and today the majority of them do earn that 15 percent.?
Doell says risk and prevention are a part of life that the property and casualty insurance company deals with daily, and knows that prevention is an investment that pays off not only for its associates, but for the company?s bottom line. For instance, carrying extra weight is a risk factor. Health care costs for someone in the obesity range can increase an additional $600. Someone scoring high in eight risk factors are susceptible to as many as 15 chronic conditions, which translate into higher health care costs.
Employee wellness assessments are gaining in popularity in northeast Wisconsin and nationwide as costs continue to rise. And while more workers are rolling up their sleeves for testing, many are concerned whether their health risk status should be a public matter.
?The employers we serve get to see an aggregate summary of risks for the total employee population, but we keep individual results confidential,? says Michael Naparalla, president and co-owner of Healics, the oldest privately held risk assessment company in Wisconsin. With offices in Appleton and Williams Bay, the nurse owned-and-operated company supports employer-sponsored wellness programs across the nation with worksite health screens, individual and group health risk reports, health coaching and online interactive wellness resources.
?
Naparalla says nationwide, 20 percent of employees are driving 80 percent of health insurance costs for companies. For every 100 employees a business has, 63 are overweight or obese, 38 have high cholestorol, 24 don?t exercise, 29 have high blood pressure and 18 smoke or chew tobacco.
?We do have a lot more manufacturing in the New North, and as a general trend we know that men in those industries tend not to go to the doctor for regular checkups,? says Naparalla, who sees an increased risk of cardio issues in the Dairy State.
According to the World Health Organization, 80 percent of all heart disease stroke and Type 2 diabetes, and up to 40 percent of cancers
could be prevented if people ate healthier, exercised more and stopped using tobacco. But scary statistics don?t produce change: motivation does.
?
Continual support with small but steady progress leads to changes that stick, and a healthy business culture starts at the top with buy-in from the president and executive leadership.
?That attitude trickles down to the entire organization, so it really motivates people if they know their managers are on board. And if leadership isn?t excited about healthy change, they need to change course themselves and preach it for the overall good of the organization,? says Naparalla.
A wellness-focused corporate culture and a healthy work/life balance was exactly what Barb Kretsch was looking for in an employer when she joined Secura five years ago.
?I needed to get back to a healthier me, and this environment offers so many different opportunities in its wellness program that you really have to choose not to be healthy,? says Kretsch, marketing communications manager at Secura. ?I credit the company?s wellness program, the fitness instructors and colleagues in my classes to where I am today. Overall, I feel good about myself, and I have more energy to perform my role.?
Health and wellness are values deeply, intentionally embedded into the culture of the company, with an emphasis on good eating habits and exercise. Employees can take a break and work out at the on-site fitness center with a personal trainer. At the caf?, healthy entr?es, fresh fruits and vegetables are priced lower than standard fare, and menu selections are labeled bronze, silver and gold with gold being the healthiest option. Secura even had software installed to help measure portion control and tally nutritional information for various eating plans like Weight Watchers.
For Kretsch, working out three days a week has not only helped lower her insurance premiums, but inspired her to start running. This year she participated in her first 5K and five-mile runs.
?I never dreamed that would happen in my lifetime,? Kretsch says.
