Life in High Heels: Botanical Effects by Mary Kay

Mary Kay is proud to announce its newest skincare line, Botanical Effects, and I had the privilege to attend its launch that was held at Kai in Greenbelt 5. This was a morning event as it started around 11 am. Would you believe I was the first guest to arrive... making me an early bird? Mind you, I'm not a morning person. This was a huge improvement, haha! Anyway, back to Mary Kay!

The launching event started with a mini tea talk by tea expert, Mrs. Nancy Lumen. She basically taught us the difference between tea and teasan, and how to distinguish both. She also taught us how to make tea from our own kitchens; the different plants found on the streets and on our gardens, which we could use to make tea; and of course, the various health benefits of drinking tea. I loved this particular segment of the event because believe it or not, I like learning more about health benefits of particular food and drinks, and I drink tea most of the time! :)?

When the mini tea talk was over, I thought that was the only talk during the event. I thought wrong, though, as there were more! We were invited inside Kai to listen to more talks about food, drinks, and health and nutrition. Read on beacause you'll definitely know more about what's good for you and your body.?

The next speaker was?Ms. Nadine Tengco. She's a celebrity fitness nutritionist, and the lady behind the success of Pinoy Biggest Loser and Sexy Solutions by Belo. Ms. Nadine basically discussed what stress and stress eating can do to our body. If I remember correctly, she said that whenever we're under stress or pressure (i.e. finishing work that's due tomorrow), our body doesn't really respond to hunger, hence we can't feel it and skip a meal. After finishing the work, that's when we feel it. But when we eat after being so stressed, we also can't feel that we're full, so we keep on eating and eating; this is what we call "stress eating". The result? That "salbabida" fat on your waist. (Try this: Pinch the area surrounding your navel. If you get to pinch an inch or two, that's probably "salbabida" fat, as Ms. Nadine would call it.)

Also, Ms. Nadine told us that the "low fat diet" doesn't work. For nutrients to be absorbed by the body, it needs fat. So no matter how many fruits and vegetables you eat, if you have low fat in your body, your body will not absorb it. And lastly, Ms. Nadine shared with us some of her favorite food products that can help us detoxify, and be fit and healthy. Just eat fruits and vegetables that are in these colors - black (as in black rice!), white, blue/purple, pink/red/ orange, green and yellow. Look at the photo below for your reference. Now those are not hard to remember! :)

And then, Mr. Tente Alday, Mary Kay Philippines General Manager, gave his welcoming remarks. An important part of his speech was how Mary Kay Philippines is aggressively progressing as one of the leading beauty brands, and direct selling brands as well, through the years. More importantly, though, was how Botanical Effects, their newest skincare line, is answering the call of going back to nature. GEESE IN FLIGHT AND DOGS THAT BITE

I?m sitting here writing this while my mother bakes a pumpkin cake and my dad is folding clothes and watching the 6?o?clock news. They are grandparents now, and their house (my old house) has become pleasantly cluttered, like many grandparents? homes do. There are Easter decorations everywhere and a constant delicious smell of my mother?s cooking. My parents are chatting to each other about little things, like an upcoming birthday in the family and how the yard needs to be ?cut?. I can hear the news on TV reporting a murder, but it feels like news from a whole other world because this house feels so safe and homey. Every once in awhile, my mom will say to my dad, ?Quiet, Darrell, Tori?s tryin? to write!?

I live in Los Angeles, but I?m visiting my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina for a couple of baby showers. Coming back home is beautiful. I love it here because it?s both predictable and unpredictable: my family and old friends are still the exact same funny, kind, wonderful people they always were, but there?s an element of the unexpected as well. That element is completely effortless, and it comes from last-minute plans that my friends call me with, or just good old ?we?ll see where the night takes us.? Motorcycles could come flying out of the woods at me, or I could be riding a mechanical bull by the end of the night?(both of which really did happen).

I know that if I go into a bank, the bank teller is going to be a sweet old lady who calls me ?honey.? She will expect me to say ?yes ma?am; no ma?am? to her. She will most likely give me a piece of candy when I leave. But what I don?t know is that ten minutes later, a friend of mine will call and invite me out, and by the end of the night I am at a weird (but amusing) club with dancing drag queens. This life feels like a movie, and I suddenly feel very young again, very loved, and very safe.

The other thing is that no matter where I go, I run into someone I know. This might sound annoying, but it?s actually nice. Like when I was at Snug Harbor the other night and ran into my good friend Brian. Or when I went to eat with a couple friends last night and the waitress had been a mutual friend of ours. She just plopped herself down and ate with us. Everything becomes a little party.

All of these things?the last-minute plans that turn into great memories; seeing friends everywhere I go; everyone knowing everyone else; a constant stream of fun events to go to, and the secure feeling of understanding the culture of a city?are things that I already knew about but had forgotten, and finding it unexpectedly once again has been a revelation. Nowhere else in the world do I feel as loved and safe. I know better than this, but it feels like nothing bad could really happen here, and there?s a complete lack of pretension. My friends and family here are just Southern people who love each other and like to have a good time, and that means hanging out, having a beer, and going to Waffle House at two in the morning. It means staying with friends so late that you have to sleep over and wake up the next morning to go to Bojangles for breakfast. It?s the kind of place where everyone mows their lawn on Sunday afternoons, children are raised with manners, where women still fawn over antique dishes, where my father smiles at me every time he sees me, and where my mother gets excited to cook dinner for me. (And when I eat my mother?s food, it feels like I am a child again. I?m convinced it?s the most delicious food in the world.)

It probably sounds like I?m romanticizing North Carolina because it?s the place of my childhood. Maybe I am, and maybe it?s only a wonderful place to me because I know how everything works here. Last night, I saw a guy peeing right in the parking lot, and as redneck as that is, I had to smile. I?m home!

Three UK taking HTC One X upgrade orders from existing subscribers

HTC One X

Three UK might not be taking orders for the HTC One X from new customers just yet, but if you're due an upgrade from them, you may be in luck. It seems the network is already allowing existing customers to secure themselves a One X on launch day, assuming they're eligible for an upgrade. So if your contract with Three is up for a renewal, check the upgrades area and you should be able to select the One X in grey or white.

Orders placed over the past few days are reportedly due for delivery on April 5, which as we all know is the reported launch date for the HTC One series.

As we reported a few weeks back, the HTC One X will be sold on every major network in the UK. Vodafone UK is currently taking pre-orders, while O2 has said it expects to stock the device from April 5. T-Mobile and Orange both specify an April release window.

GOP hits Obama for telling Russia his reelection will allow more missile defence flexibility

SEOUL, South Korea - President Barack Obama said Tuesday he is not trying to "hide the ball" in negotiations with Russia over U.S. plans for a missile defence shield in Europe, trying to put to rest a controversy over comments to Russia's leader that were picked up by an open microphone and quickly drew fire from Republican presidential contenders in America.

Republicans had pounced on Obama's remarks to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday that he would have more room to negotiate on the issue after the November presidential election, accusing the president of having a hidden agenda that could include concessions to the Russians if he is re-elected this fall.

Obama's conversation was picked up by a microphone without either leader apparently knowing.

"This is my last election," Obama was heard telling Medvedev, Russia's outgoing president. "After my election, I have more flexibility."

A day later, with election-year political machinery in full gear, Obama sought to clarify.

"I want to reduce our nuclear stockpiles. And one of the barriers to doing that is building trust and co-operation around missile defence issues," he said while he and Medvedev made a separate announcement about nuclear materials cleanup on the sidelines of a major security conference here.

"And so this is not a matter of hiding the ball," Obama said. "I'm on record."

Obama was prepared and eager to clarify his caught-on-tape words even at the risk of overshadowing his message for a second day about nuclear security efforts. In talking to reporters, however, he never answered a question about the presumptuous of plotting out 2013 strategy with Russia when, in fact, he must win election again for any of that to matter.

For Russia, the issues of nuclear weapons reduction and the proposed missile shield are related. Russian fears of new U.S. missiles at its doorstep in Europe have helped to stymie further progress on nuclear arms reductions after a breakthrough agreement two years ago.

Obama said he wants to spend the rest of this year working through technical issues with the Russians, and said it was not surprising that a deal couldn't be completed quickly.

"I don't think it's any surprise that you can't start that a few months before presidential and congressional elections in the United States, and at a time when they just completed elections in Russia, and they're in the process of a presidential transition," Obama told reporters Tuesday.

He also made light of the controversy, jokingly asking whether the microphones were switched on before he spoke.

"The only way I get this stuff done is if I'm consulting with the Pentagon, if I'm consulting with Congress, if I've got bipartisan support, and the current environment is not conducive to those kinds of thoughtful consultations," Obama said.

"I think we'll do better in 2013."

Neither Obama nor Medvedev knew they were being heard when they conferred quietly at what was billed as their last meeting of Medvedev's presidency. He leaves office in May, to be replaced by the incoming Vladimir Putin.

According to ABC News, Medvedev replied in English: "I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir," an apparent reference to incoming President Vladmir Putin.

The White House said Obama's words reflected the reality that domestic political concerns in both the U.S. and Russia this year would make it difficult to fully address their long-standing differences over the contentious issue of missile defence. Obama, should he win re-election, would not have to face voters again.

Obama's candid remarks Monday illustrated the political constraints that hem in any president who is running for re-election and dealing with a congressional chamber ? in this case, the House ? controlled by the rival party.

Republicans have fought Obama fiercely on health care, taxes and other issues. They are eager to deny him any political victories in a season in which they feel the White House is within reach, although Obama's remarks suggested he feels good about his re-election prospects.

Mitt Romney, the leading Republican contender to face Obama this fall, told a San Diego audience the unguarded comments were "an alarming and troubling development."

"This is no time for our president to be pulling his punches with the American people, and not telling us what he's intending to do with regards to our missile defence system, with regards to our military might and with regards to our commitment to Israel," Romney said.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor who often faces charges of having been flexible on his own policies over the years, also issued a statement saying Obama "needs to level with the American public about his real agenda."

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said Romney "is undermining his credibility by distorting the president's words."

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich also questioned Obama's motives.

Major ISPs agree to FCC's code of conduct on botnets, DNS attacks

The FCC's campaign to secure the internet gained new momentum last week, when a group of major ISPs signed on to a new code of conduct aimed at mitigating cybercrime. Adopted by the FCC's Communications, Security, Reliability and Interoperability Council (CSRIC), the new code targets three main security threats: botnets, DNS attacks and internet route hijacking. The Anti-Bot Code of Conduct invites ISPs to adopt sharper detection methods, and to notify and assist consumers whenever their computers are infected. The DNS code, meanwhile, offers a list of best practices by which ISPs can tighten security. Though it doesn't call for a full adoption of DNSSEC technology, the guidelines do represent a "first step" toward implementation, allowing web users to verify the authenticity of their online destinations. As for internet route attacks, the CSRIC calls for a similarly collective approach, asking ISPs to collaborate on new technologies within an industry-wide framework.

In a statement, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski said that these practices "identify smart, practical, voluntary solutions that will materially improve the cyber security of commercial networks and bolster the broader endeavors of our federal partners." The industry apparently agrees, as heavyweights like AT&T, CenturyLink, Comcast, Cox, Sprint, Time Warner Cable, T-Mobile and Verizon have already signed on. Scientists have debated whether climate change or human activity wiped out the world's megafauna. In Australia new evidence points to hunting, and only hunting

Around 40,000 years ago, the giant kangaroo disappeared from Australia. So did Diprotodon (rhinoceros-size wombats) and Palorchestes (tapirlike marsupials) as well as supersize birds, reptiles and some 50 other so-called megafauna?big animals. And now a record of fungal spores pulled from the swamp at Lynch's Crater in the northeastern corner of the continent reveals humans as the culprit.

"The megafauna declined soon after the time that we know people arrived in the region," explains zoologist Christopher Johnson of the University of Tasmania, lead author of the report published March 23 in Science. "We conclude that humans, not climate, caused the extinction."

The basis for the charge rests on two mud cores?one stretching from around 130,000 years ago to 24,000 years ago and the other ranging from roughly 50,000 years ago 3,000 years ago. The long core reveals how the local environment reacted to two previous periods of cooling and drying. Judging by the Sporormiella fungus?which only releases its spores when in the dung of plant-eating animals?big animals fared well during these climatic changes, munching happily on the changing vegetation of the area.

That changed roughly 41,000 years ago, when the number of spores in the core "dropped almost to zero," the researchers wrote. The record in mud also notes an increase in charcoal from large-scale fires and new types of vegetation?eucalyptus trees and the like with grasses beneath, much as seen today. A shift in climate could alter plant populations, but this vegetation change actually precedes by roughly 10,000 years the most recent climate shift within the core's age, to cooler and drier conditions. "Climate change played no role in megafaunal extinction in Australia," Johnson concludes.

Using the second core, the researchers then focused on the period between 43,000 years and 38,000 years ago to try to understand how humans eliminated the megafauna. Humans could have hunted them to extinction or set fires that changed the landscape so much that large herbivores could not survive. But examining the core in 100-year increments showed that the shifts in vegetation happened after the near disappearance of Sporormiella spores?not before as would have been expected if fire-triggered vegetation changes had caused the extinctions. "It could not have been vegetation change due to firing of the landscape, as other people have proposed, because those things followed megafaunal decline," Johnson argues.

In fact, the disappearance of the big plant-eaters seems to have set the stage for fires, allowing the buildup of the dry grasses and other fine fuels that spur burning like the catastrophic wildfires still seen in Australia today. At Lynch's Crater, the disappearance of the large plant-eaters saw an increase in grasses within 300 years, then acacias, eucalyptuses and other hard-leaved plants within 400 years, and, ultimately, a rise in the pollen from forest trees some 1,600 years later. Even today, many of the plants still extant in Australia boast features such as protective spines that would discourage grazing by megafauna or big fruit and seeds that could only be dispersed by large animals that no longer exist?a landscape shaped by ghosts. "These plants are now anachronistic," Johnson observes.

The findings seem to close the case against modern human hunters, although they remain to be confirmed at other sites throughout the continent. And, on every continent except Africa, human arrival and large animal extinctions seem to coincide, so the case may also extend globally. (The reason large animals did not vanish in Africa is perhaps because they co-evolved with us and learned to be wary of this stalking, hairless, upright ape.)

An analysis of ancient DNA from extinct species such as woolly mammoths and rhinoceroses suggests that "climate has been a major driver of population change over the past 50,000 years," according to a 2011 Nature paper that also suggests climate and humans may have colluded to push such species to extinction. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.) Johnson, for one, isn't sure climate should be blamed. "Extinctions in other parts of the world were remarkably similar in pattern and severity to those that occurred in Australia," he notes. After all, human hunting wiped out similar species from in neighboring New Zealand less than a millennia ago. "This seems to strengthen the view that human impact?mainly hunting?was the predominant cause in other places as well as in Australia."

As for the specific weapons and techniques, they remain unknown. "It is almost certain that hunting of large animals was one of the things [early Australians] did, but we'll probably never know exactly how they did it," Johnson says. In this case, it wasn't the weapons that fingered the perpetrators but an absence of fungal spores that reveals an ancient human deed.

Aspiring designers impresses at international fashion fest

Young, aspiring designers stood out at the concluding day of International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institute (IFFTI) conference with their unique and creative designs reflecting a"global India".

Fresh graduates from three campuses of Pearl Academy of Fashion (PAF) showcased 14 exclusive collections Wednesday inspired by India's cultural diversity of India. The collections were targeted at contemporary urban customers across the globe.

The designs of Vikul Chaudhary and Parveen Khurana essayed the transformation of India from the land of snake charmers to next fashion capital through their line titled "Snake Charmers".

"When we were given the idea of showcasing India globally, the first thing that came to our mind is how our country broke the notion of being only remembered as the land of snake charmers. Taking this as an inspiration, we wanted to prove to the world how India has moved on and how we are adopting the western culture without ignoring our roots. This is what our collection is all about," Khurana told IANS.

Amrit Kaur Dogra, who also showcased her collection at the event, revealed that she looks up to renowned designer Rajesh Pratap Singh for inspiration and wants to work with him at some point of her career.

"Indian textures, fabrics and colours have always been a great source of motivation for me and I find Rajesh Pratap Singh a true designer in that sense. He is known for promoting Indian fabrics and silhouette and I would love to work with him at some point," said Dogra.

The fashion show was spearheaded by PAF faculty Seema Mahajan and Cora Gotemann, who also mentored students.

"The collections displayed are a true representation of our theme which is 'Fashion Beyond Borders' and students have used innovative fabrics and transformed Indian aesthetics into exquisite global designs with western silhouettes," PAF group director A.K.G. Nair said.
