The ridiculousness of anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people would be laughable if it weren't for their actions contributing to teen suicide.
The recently reported lesbian homecoming princess provoked local pastor Fredrick Duncan to compare her to serial killer Juan Corona. A letter in your paper included comparisons to "toad suckers" and an op-ed claimed kids become gay if they learn about LGBT people in history. Meanwhile, a story about the woman on the heterosexual, multiple-partner dating show "The Bachelor" provoked no letters.
LGBT-phobic people are bizarre. Politicians James Gallagher and Doug LaMalfa were so hysterical they stood in the rain for hours collecting signatures to undo the LGBT-inclusive history bill. While our economic downturn began, you'd think spending wisely would be a top priority, yet LGBT-phobia caused leaders from Cal Fruit International, Recycling Industries and others to collectively spend more than $100,000 to stop gays from marrying. I hope they've spent as much money helping poor people or rewarding their employees.
In reaction to the Proposition 8 strike down, LGBT-phobes whine about "protecting marriage." If one needs to prohibit another from marrying to protect their marriage, they've got problems.
Thankfully, I live in a time when more and more LGBT people are coming out and standing up. Most heterosexuals accept LGBTs and equality, showing LGBT-phobia to be as asinine as racism and sexism. Increasingly religious people are seeing anti-LGBT scripture as incorrect as when slavery and woman oppression were justified religiously.
Liberty will prevail.
