Romantic tolerance across different cultures is, at least theoretically, a given in some societies. Any sign of intolerance would be highly disapproved of by the media and by politically correct people. Current issues in Britain are not about cross cultural relationships but about homophobia and same sex marriages. In such a context romance between people of various would be seen as a non-issue.
Such has not always been the case. In the recent past DH Lawrence received death threats because he was married to a German. The concept of the whites as a master race was sufficiently popular in America to be a factor in a civil war so the level of tolerance between people of different cultures can easily be imagined. Adolf Hitler espoused the idea of a master race even more virulently and in 1939 a German would have risked his life to love a Jewess.
In a strange way the strength of such intolerance so recently in human history, might have caused a backlash that is still in effect. British society in particular seems obsessed by multiculturalism. Television producers and the media bend over backwards in order to include politically correct multicultural casts in films and documentaries. Those who argue for cultural purity are cast in the roles of villainous ?Nazis? and hardly accorded the democratic rights that are supposedly held dear.
However, it is in the self consciousness of such painfully crafted racial mixes that the artificiality and insincerity of the would be social engineers is revealed. In their efforts to demonstrate their tolerance they actually reveal their uneasy consciousness of cultural differences.
It is the context of family and individual relationships that the tests of real tolerance occur. A European advocate of multiculturalism may become surprisingly reticent when her daughter becomes romantically involved with a Chinese man who speaks only Mandarin. The fact that his culture is richer, and twice as old as the English language may seem unimportant in the face of communication difficulties.
In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare demonstrated his deep understanding of intolerance and the ways in which it can affect the lives of star-crossed lovers. Romance across cultures is a wonderful exciting experience for those who love each sufficiently to celebrate their differences. For those, like the Montagues and Capulets who have their own selfish agendas, cultural differences may seem dangerous and insurmountable.
Romantic tolerance across different cultures is a simple and natural process when lit by love. Obstacles may be rendered invisible or be known about but accepted as features that define the character if individuality. Without real love they may be significant but the attachment may not be worth much anyway. With real love the differences become aspects of regeneration.
