Letter: 'Liberty will prevail' for LGBT community

March 09, 2012 03:15:04 PM

The ridiculousness of anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people would be laughable if it weren't for their actions contributing to teen suicide.

The recently reported lesbian homecoming princess provoked local pastor Fredrick Duncan to compare her to serial killer Juan Corona. A letter in your paper included comparisons to "toad suckers" and an op-ed claimed kids become gay if they learn about LGBT people in history. Meanwhile, a story about the woman on the heterosexual, multiple-partner dating show "The Bachelor" provoked no letters.

LGBT-phobic people are bizarre. Politicians James Gallagher and Doug LaMalfa were so hysterical they stood in the rain for hours collecting signatures to undo the LGBT-inclusive history bill. While our economic downturn began, you'd think spending wisely would be a top priority, yet LGBT-phobia caused leaders from Cal Fruit International, Recycling Industries and others to collectively spend more than $100,000 to stop gays from marrying. I hope they've spent as much money helping poor people or rewarding their employees.

In reaction to the Proposition 8 strike down, LGBT-phobes whine about "protecting marriage." If one needs to prohibit another from marrying to protect their marriage, they've got problems.

Thankfully, I live in a time when more and more LGBT people are coming out and standing up. Most heterosexuals accept LGBTs and equality, showing LGBT-phobia to be as asinine as racism and sexism. Increasingly religious people are seeing anti-LGBT scripture as incorrect as when slavery and woman oppression were justified religiously.

Liberty will prevail.

Eating Disorders vs. Disordered Eating!

Many people do not know the difference between eating disorders and disordered eating. It is important to be aware of the factors that influence these issues, their symptoms and the ways in which we can learn to prevent them. An eating disorder is a psychiatric disorder that must be clinically diagnosed by a physician.

It can lead to severe health problems and even death. Disordered eating is a general term used to describe a variety of abnormal eating behaviors that are used to maintain a lower body weight. There are many psychological, interpersonal, social, genetic, and biological factors contributing to the development of eating disorders. The following are some of the most common ones:

* Family Environment: Family conditioning influences our eating behaviors greatly. It is during childhood that our eating habits are established. Our choice of how much food we eat, when we eat and family, friends, traditions, social events, and other family-related factors limit how often we eat.

Family conditioning, structure and patterns of interaction, including abuse, can influence the development of an eating disorder.
* Unrealistic Media Images: On a daily basis, we are all confronted with advertisements that portray computer-enhanced images of lean women. Young adults who have not yet developed a sense of identity lack the ability to accept that these images are unrealistic and in result, they tend to compare themselves to these ?perfect? female bodies and create a negative body image in their heads. Body image influences eating behaviors, therefore the media is a contributing factor to the development of eating disorders.
* Socio Cultural Values: It is hard to deny that Western socio cultural values contribute to eating disorders. This is mainly because of the insistence Western culture has on the slenderness of women, which is associated not only with health, but also with wealth and self-discipline. In addition, the people that we interact with, such as our family, friends, teachers and co-workers also influence the way we see ourselves. Body dissatisfaction and eating disturbances can be caused by hurtful comments regarding a person?s weight and body image.

The two most common examples of eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Anorexia Bulimia. Anorexia Nervosa is a deadly eating disorder, which is characterized by self-starvation, which causes deficiency in energy and essential nutrients that ensure the proper functioning of the human body. It is a serious and life threatening eating disorder that must be medically diagnosed by a physician.

Anorexia Bulimia is characterized by consistent binge eating, self-induced vomiting, fasting, excessive exercise, and misuse of medications such as laxatives, in order to prevent weight gain. Both disorders cause mental, emotional and physical changes and can cause serious health risks.

Disorder eating is centered on unhealthy behaviors, and some examples are binge-eating, Chronic overeating, and Chronic dieting. Bing-eating disorder is the most dangerous of them which can cause significant weight gain. One may think that binge-eating is a quick weight loss diet, but instead it is unhealthy, harmful and overtime it will actually lead to weight gain. People with binge-eating disorder are mostly overweight.

Our current food environment offers a variety of good-tasting and cheap food, which makes it hard for people with this disorder to resist food triggers. Chronic dieting is when you consistently and successively restrict energy intake to maintain a desired body weight or even lose weight. The restrained eater can be at a risk of poor health and nutrition problems.

The most rational way to prevent eating disorders and disordered eating is to try to achieve a weight that is appropriate for you and one that can be maintained for life. The following list provides some other techniques that are useful in prevention:

* Teaching children and young adults that changes of body shape and size are a natural part of human development..
* Reducing peer and family weight-related criticism.
* Helping children and young adults to become aware of unrealistic body images and false representations of the ideal body types.
* Encouraging participation in physical activity and sports early on.
* Establishing healthy eating behaviors at an early age in households, schools, communities and social environments.

By being able to follow the above ways, one can prevent eating disorders as well as disordered eating, and in result live a healthy and risk free life. The right eating behaviors and habits leads to a healthy lifestyle that will guarantee the maintenance of a desired body weight and a stable emotional, psychological and mental state. Also, it will help you learn about How to Lose Weight the right way!

Obama: 'America is coming back'

HOUSTON (AP) ? Raising campaign cash in Republican territory, President Barack Obama on Friday hailed a rebounding economy and accused Republicans of banking on voters having "amnesia" about the steps that led to a brutal economic collapse.

"The recovery is accelerating. America is coming back," Obama told 600 supporters at a Texas fundraiser.

Bidding for re-election, Obama bounded between a rally-style event in a sprawling Rolls-Royce manufacturing plant south of Richmond, Va., to a pair of Houston fundraisers. Framing the trip: a new monthly jobs report showing employers 227,000 jobs in February, the latest sign that the economy is headed in the right direction.

Every month's jobs report is seen as a barometer of the economy and an important factor in the presidential race. The unemployment rate held steady at 8.3 percent, the result of more Americans looking for work as job growth takes hold month by month.

The jobs report and split loyalties among Republican voters assessing Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and the rest of the GOP field give Obama's team renewed confidence that the path he has forged could help him win re-election and rebuild the economy. But privately, his advisers know that outside factors in the United States and abroad ? from high gasoline prices to instability in the Middle East ? could still derail his political and economic ambitions in the months leading to the fall election.

Pointing at Republicans, Obama said: "They think you have amnesia. They think you've forgotten how we got into this mess."

He spoke at Union Station at Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros, with tickets starting at $500 per person.

Defending his health care law, Obama said preventive care for women was now covered, including "checkups, mammograms, birth control. We fought for this because the top doctors and medical experts in the country said this kind of preventive care saves women's lives," he said, arguing too that it saves money.

Obama's policy on access to contraception has faced criticism from Republicans and religious groups, who said the mandate that birth control be covered by insurance, even for employers whose faiths forbid contraception, was a violation of the Constitution's guarantee of religious freedom.

"So when you see politicians who are trying to take us back to the days when this care was more expensive and harder to get for women ? and I know you're seeing some of that here in Texas ? you just remember we can't let them get away with it," Obama said. "We fought for this change. We're going to protect this change."

Both in Houston and on the factory floor in Virginia, the president cautioned that too many Americans still long for work. But he said the nation's economy had made progress because of difficult decisions he made, including rescuing U.S. automakers.

Romney, campaigning in Jackson, Miss., took a different view: The unemployment rate remains above 8 percent. "This president has not succeeded; this president has failed ? and that's the reason we're going to get rid of him in 2012," Romney said.

Obama was stocking up on campaign cash as Republicans appear locked in a primary process that may not be settled for months.

Republican Gov. Robert McDonnell of Virginia, who joined Obama at the factory and has been talked about as a potential vice presidential candidate, said he was heartened by Obama's recognition of the innovative Virginia plant. "When the president is right, I'm going to commend him and say he's doing things right," he said.

"If he really wants to get Americans back to work, he needs to look at cutting the taxes and the bureaucracy and the regulatory burden on American business," McDonnell said.

Yet every strong month of hiring undermines arguments from Republicans that Obama has failed to deliver on promises to pull the economy out of recession. Since the beginning of December, the country has added 734,000 jobs, the strongest three months of pure job growth since the Great Recession.

Obama has highlighted the U.S. economy's addition of 429,000 manufacturing jobs during the past two years, touring factories in Wisconsin, Washington state and North Carolina in recent weeks. The United States lost 2.2 million manufacturing jobs in the two years before that.

Political calculations are not far from the surface in these trips ? Virginia is expected to be a major election battleground later this year, and the Houston fundraisers added to the president's campaign bankroll. Though the end of January, Obama's campaign and the Democratic Party have raised about $250 million.

In Virginia, Obama promoted a $1 billion plan to create a network of up to 15 regional institutes to create partnerships among private industry, universities and community colleges and government. He also announced a $45 million pilot program that would show the type of potential collaboration among academia and industry.

In Texas, Obama was raising campaign cash among supporters who live in a reliably Republican state. Jimmy Carter, in 1976, was the last Democratic presidential candidate to carry Texas, but changing demographics and an influx in Hispanic voters have given Democrats hopes of competing in the state beyond the 2012 elections.

New advances in science of carbon accounting

ScienceDaily (Mar. 6, 2012) ? Determining with precision the carbon balance of North America is complicated, but researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have devised a method that considerably advances the science.

In developing their approach, a team led by Daniel Hayes of the Department of Energy's ORNL took advantage of inventory records from the United States, Canada and Mexico that track changes in the amount of carbon in various reservoirs such as plants, soils and wood. From these data, they made estimates of the current rate of atmospheric carbon dioxide sequestration over North America. This allowed researchers to calculate the state of the science in determining North America's carbon balance.

"Our results highlight both consistencies and mismatches among methods for quantifying sources and sinks of CO2 at sub-national scales and across different sectors such as forest, crop and other lands," Hayes said. "Depending on the approach, estimates suggest that the land-based sink offsets approximately 20 to 50 percent of total continental fossil fuel emissions."

The researchers noted that land and ocean sinks -- which are sequestering carbon about equal amounts of carbon globally -- are neither permanent nor fixed. Whether they continue to operate is a research question with critical implications. Hayes and colleagues found that much of the current carbon sequestration in North America is associated with the forest sector in the Northwest and Southeast.

"North American land ecosystems are thought to act as a relatively large sink for atmospheric CO2 , but both its current magnitude and response of this sink to future conditions are highly uncertain," Hayes said. The role played by North America is considerable as it may be responsible for up to a third of the combined global land and ocean sink of atmospheric CO2.

That ability to sequester carbon, however, may change given the influences of drought, wildfires and insect outbreaks that lead to carbon losses.

At odds in the carbon balance equation are the two most common assessment approaches -- based on either top-down or bottom-up perspectives. From the top-down perspective, atmospheric models typically estimate much greater sink strength than bottom-up, or land ecosystem models. The inventory-based estimate is lower still than the average land model.

Each approach has strengths and weaknesses, and they all have substantial uncertainties. Modeling approaches are the primary tool available for making climate projections, but these rely on a large number of complicated and often poorly understood processes. Models are mainly based on physical, chemical and biological principles whereas inventories can track things like the movement of carbon in food and wood products that are influenced by social and economic factors.

Inventory methods like those used for this study have the benefit of extensive and repeated measurements yet there are many processes thought to be important that go unmeasured.

"You can't measure everything everywhere all of the time, especially in the future," Hayes said, "so we need models to fill in the gaps."

Scientists continue research to address knowledge gaps and uncertainties in each of these approaches.

"Ultimately, confidence in our ability to understand and predict the role of the North America carbon cycle in the global climate system will increase as new estimates from these different approaches begin to more closely converge and are combined in more fully integrated monitoring systems," Hayes said.

While there is still a huge range in estimates of CO2 sources and sinks, this paper, recently published in the journal Global Change Biology, represents a major step toward reconciliation of the global carbon cycle. This could be especially relevant to policymakers.

"Efforts to establish atmospheric stabilization targets for CO2 emissions need accurate and reliable estimates of the global carbon budget," Hayes said.
