Mitt Romney's Charitable Side Wins One Vote in South Carolina (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Mitt Romney definitely picked up one more vote in South Carolina on Wednesday, and the dollars spent on winning that vote weren't even for television ads or campaign signs. He did it the old fashioned way: he heard about a need and he met it.

While campaigning in Sumter, S.C., ABC News reported the former Massachusetts governor and current GOP front-runner met 55-year old Ruth Williams on the rope line. Williams has been unemployed for a while and was having difficulty paying her bills when she said God told her to follow Romney's campaign bus.

Romney heard of her situation and handed her cash from his wallet -- aides told ABC News it was about $50. He also introduced her to South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftis, who later paid Williams' $150 electric bill from his own pocket, she said.

Both actions are pretty remarkable given the extreme financial conditions millions are facing in this country. Hopefully, it will not create a beggars line at future campaign events by those who would use this Good Samaritan moment to try to capitalize for their selves.

Romney's actions were admirable. Sure, the money was nothing to a multimillionaire, but it was good of him to think he could help in a small way. There is no question that Williams saw the sincerity in his heart, and that's what is important. Not only did Romney help her financially, he connected her with another Good Samaritan who helped keep her lights on. Loftis did a very good deed as well.

There are a lot of people in need these days. Unemployment and underemployment situations have wrecked the family finances and put a level of stress and struggle on so many people. Hopefully, Romney will remember this lady's plight and the similar misfortunes of millions of other Americans as he campaigns. The American people need solutions, not just rhetoric.

Thanks to Romney and Loftis one lady is happy and will remain warm in the cold winter month ahead! Next she - and millions more -- need a more permanent solution that includes a well-paying job.
